I-90 CDA River Bridges

Project Details

The I-90 CDA River Bridges project involves the replacement of both the eastbound and westbound bridges near milepost 40 in Cataldo, Idaho. These bridges, originally built in 1964, are located in a floodplain, presenting unique challenges for the design and construction phases.

MJK successfully opened up the new I-90 EB bridge in the winter of 2025. The work consisted of erecting steel girders, followed be the installation of precast deck panels. The panels were joined together using an ultra high performance concrete. There were multiple obstacles that MJK and ITD had to overcome, but none bigger than the local union strike. By working with the owner and the subcontractors, Kuney was able to mitigate this delay by resequencing the job, as well as using acceleration efforts to make up for the lost time. Traffic was able to return to normal configuration on the EB bridge prior to winter starting. To fully complete the bridge, Kuney and subcontractors will still need to complete an overlay over the driving surface. This work is scheduled to happen at the end of 2026.

Kuney has been working on scheming for the upcoming 2026 season and looks forward to another successful bridge replacement on the WB side of I-90. The work itself will be completed in a similar manner to the EB bridge in 2025 season. Kuney is anticipating an early October 2026 opening of the WB bridge. The work bridge trestle located between the two I-90 bridges will be removed prior to Winter.
