SR 290 BARKER ROAD/BNSF GRADE SEPARATION PROJECT

Spokane, WA: New bridge taking Barker Rd over the BNSF Railway, and interchange with SR 290

Project Details

The Barker Road/BNSF grade separation project improved safety by replacing the existing at-grade BNSF Railway crossing on Barker Road with an overpass and constructing a roundabout at the Barker Road/Trent Avenue intersection. The grade of Barker Road was raised, and a new 3-span prestressed concrete girder bridge was built over the railroad tracks. The new roundabout was constructed offset from the existing alignment, creating a new interchange for SR 290 with Barker and Wellesley roads. Kuney constructed six cast-in-place cantilevered retaining walls totaling nearly 700 feet in length as part of raising Barker Road.

This transportation project not only improved safety for the region by eliminating an at-grade railroad crossing but also enhanced the region's ability to develop industrial property in the area.
