SR 539 / GUIDE MERIDIAN WIDENING: TENMILE ROAD TO SR 546

Bellingham, Washington: Four mile long widening of the Guide Meridian including four new bridges and two bridge widenings.
Project Details

This project, completed in 2009, transformed four miles of the heavily traveled SR 539 (Guide Meridian) from a narrow, two-lane highway into a modern four-lane highway with dedicated turn lanes. Driven by an aggressive schedule, partly to accommodate the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the project tackled long stretches of roadway alongside bridge replacements or expansions at Wiser Lake, Fishtrap Creek, and the Nooksack River.
Four major intersections saw their old traffic signals replaced with the construction of efficient roundabouts. At the Nooksack River Bridge, a significant milestone was reached with the construction of the first steel truss bridge on a Washington State highway since 1986.
Substructure work at piers two and three of the Nooksack River Bridge presented a unique challenge. An 18-foot deep cofferdam was required, and the project team had to ingeniously pour a cell using telescopic driven piles. Given the project's location within a major floodplain, environmental compliance was a top priority throughout the construction process.
The project team's dedication and expertise shone through, as they consistently received accolades for their effective implementation of erosion and water pollution control measures. The completed SR 539 transformation not only improved traffic flow and safety but also stands as a testament to the team's ability to deliver a complex project under challenging conditions.
